Summer breakfasts kind of make me swoon. With fresh peaches and berries in season and just a bit more time to linger in the mornings, I’ve been putting a little extra fun into breakfast. To be completely transparent, I’ve never grasped the whole “smoothie bowl” fad…well, until now. I make a lot of smoothies and sipping them through a straw in a glass seemed just fine. Ahhh…but, what self-respecting healthy food blogger doesn’t have at least one smoothie bowl to call their own?
Once I got the ball rolling, I realized how genius this whole bowl thing really is. It gives me a chance to top my smoothie off with wonderful textures from crunchy nuts and seeds to juicy pops of berries. It also gives me a blank canvas to kind of play with my food and helps me to add some additional nutrients to start the day off right.
My focus in the mornings is all about getting some beneficial plant-based proteins. Starting the day with protein helps keep my hunger in check, glycemic levels steady and gives my body the fuel it needs to get going. I add hemp seeds to whatever I’m eating for breakfast. Hemp seeds add protein, healthy fats, are a great source of magnesium, Vitamin E and are one of the only plant sources of protein that contain all essential amino acids. I love using hemp seeds. They have a buttery texture with a nice nutty flavor. I store them in the fridge and sprinkle them on everything.
To bump up the protein even more, add some texture and a bit of natural sweetness, I also love using Bob’s Vanilla Protein Powder Nutritional Booster. It’s made with a mix of pea protein powder, chia seeds, fiber and probiotics. It’s delicious! If you are familiar with protein powders, you know that they can be really chalky. I find this one to be so tasty and not chalky at all.
Does the idea of a smoothie bowl seem over-the-top to you? I get it. Just simplify this recipe by pouring it into a glass, topping it with some hemp seeds, a few berries, then drop that straw in and sip away. Enjoy, my friends.
